Exhibition Statement
‘개척자’ 전은 더그룹 멤버 이갑재, 김해숙, 박효정, 수네혼의 정신을 형상화한 ‘선구자’라는 의미입니다. 2024년 스웨덴에서의 전시는 해외에서는 첫전시로 지난 4년 동안 전시를 개최하며 부딪쳐야하는 사회적 관습과 이에 도전해온 예술가들의 집단적 성취에 대한 사려 깊은 반성입니다.
인간 경험에 필수적인 주제를 탐구하면서 예술가들은 인간이 된다는 것이 진정 무엇을 의미하는지 고민하고 세상을 인식하고 안주하지 않고 익숙하지 않은 것에서 위안을 찾고 탐구하고 있습니다. 남아프리카에서 새로운 삶을 찾고 있는 네덜란드 정착민을 연상시키는 ‘Voortrekker’라는 용어에서 영감을 받은 ‘개척자’는 ‘Voortrekkers’의 선구적인 자질과 전통적으로 근면하고 성실한 한국 국민의 성격을 유사하게 표현합니다.
그룹의 목표는 우월성을 주장하는 것이 아니라 모범을 보여 각각의 개인이 인생이라는 여정에서 공유된 경험으로 연결되도록 유도하는 것입니다. ‘개척자’는 예술적 탐구를 기념하는 행사로, 미지의 영역을 탐색하고 창의적 표현의 경계를 재형성하려는 그룹의 확고한 의지를 보여주는 증거입니다.
The inspiration behind the exhibition: “개척자” (gae-cheog-ja) translates to “trailblazer,” embodying the spirit of Lee Kab Jae, Kim Haesook, Park Hyo Jung, and Suné Horn, members of The Group. This exhibition stands as a thoughtful reflection on the collective achievements of these artists who have, for the past five years held annual exhibitions and defied convention and expectations. This upcoming 2024 exhibition in Sweden is the first being held outside of Korea.
Delving into themes integral to the human experience, the artists contemplate what it truly means to be human, exploring diverse perspectives on perceiving the world and finding solace in the unfamiliar. Inspired by the term “Voortrekker,” referring to the descendants of Dutch settlers who migrated by wagon from the Cape Colony into the interior parts of South Africa, in order to live beyond the borders of British rule, “개척자” draws parallels between the pioneering qualities of the Voortrekker people and the traditionally diligent, hardworking, and trailblazing nature of the Korean people.
It’s essential to note that The Group’s objective is not to condescend but to set an example, inviting individuals to connect through shared experiences on the journey called life. “Making a Way” is a celebration of artistic exploration, a testament to The Group’s unwavering commitment to navigating uncharted territories and reshaping the boundaries of creative expression.
