Artist’s Statement
근대기 한국 땅 위에 일어난 문제들을 주제로 작업한다. 한국전쟁 전후로 일어난 학살과 수많은 애환을 작품에 담아내고, 이후 도시의 발전으로 무분별히 일어나는 개발의 문제에 대해 현장에 오랜시간 머물고 답사하여 사라지는 것들에 대한 아카이브 기록과 함께 작품으로 담아낸다.
지금은 사라지고 없는 집들에 대한 기록이다.
집의 마지막 모습은 이러하다. 마치 토해내듯 대문밖으로 가구들과 많은 물건들이 내버려진다. 딱지가 붙여진 가구들은 비바람을 처음으로 맞으며 많은 폐기물들과 함께 버려진다. 그 외에 하얀 포대들이 즐비하게 나오게 되는데 이 안에는 수많은 다양한 물건들이 폐기되어 있다. 그릇들 부터 각종 집기들이 뒤엉켜 산이 되어 쌓인다. 몇 달이 지나고 혹은 일년을 넘기기도 하며 이주가 끝나면 노란 비닐에 쌓인 석면들이 먼저 철거된다. CCTV가 달리고 경고 현수막이 더 달리게 되며 이주한 집에는 접근금지 테이프와 철거 예정이라는 표시로 붉은 스프레이로 쓰여지거나 스티커가 붙는다. 이후 채 버려지지 않은 집기들이 정리되며 유리가 깨지고 창틀, 문짝 등이 해체되어 나온다. 또 시간이 지나 담이 철거되고 골목길들은 넓어져 집을 온전히 길에서 바라볼 수 있게 된다. 아주 잠깐이지만 … 빠른 속도로 철거가 진행되며 나무들이 옮겨지거나 제거된다. 그 중엔 만발한 동백도 노랗게 꽃망울을 터뜨린 매화와 수선화도 있었다. 본격적인 철거가 진행될 것을 알리듯 가림막이 세워진다. 그리고… 거대한 굉음과 먼지가 사방으로 퍼지며 집은 결국 해체되어 분해된다. 오랜 시간동안 건물의 분진은 마을을 떠돈다. 마치 그 곳을 잊지 못하는 주민들처럼…
Yeo Sang Hee’s work focusses on issues that arose on Korean soil in the modern era. The genocide and many sorrows that occurred before and after the Korean War are captured in the work, and the problems and effects of redevelopment that occur indiscriminately due to the development of the city are captured in her work, along with archive records of the things that disappear after staying in these sites for a long time and exploring them.

This is what the final look of the house looks like. Furniture and many things are discarded outside the gate like vomit. Labeled furniture is the first to hit the weather and is thrown away along with a lot of waste. In addition, white sacks are lined up, and there are a lot of random things that are discarded. From vessels to various household items, they are tangled and piled up like mountains. After several months or over a year, the piled-up asbestos, wrapped in yellow plastic, is removed after the migration is over. CCTV is running, more warning banners are running, and on the designated house is written with red spray or stickers to indicate that it is going to be demolished and tapes off to prohibit access. After that, household items that have not been thrown away are cleaned up, glass is broken, window frames, door panels, etc. are dismantled and taken away. In addition, as time passes, the walls are removed and the alleyways become wider, allowing a full view of the house from the road. It’s just a little while… Demolition proceeds rapidly and trees are moved or removed. Among them were camellias in full bloom, plum blossoms, and daffodils with yellow buds. A screen is erected as if announcing that full-scale demolition is underway. And then a huge roar with dust spread everywhere, and the house was eventually dismantled and torn down. For a long time, the dust from the building floats around the city. Just like the residents who can’t forget the place…
