Artist’s Statement
수치로부터 자유로울 수는 없다.
편의를 위해 만들어진 모든 수치단위는 규격을 만들고 규격은 또 다른 규격을 만든다.
우리 주변 풍경을 살펴보면 비슷한 대상들이 연속적으로 이루어져 있다는 것을 깨닫는다. 똑같이 나열되어 있는 건물 옆면, 그 안의 규칙적인 창과 벽면의 벽돌들, 같은 크기의 가로수와 가로등, 곧게 뻗은 도로와 그 위의 자동차들, 그 위의 차와 사람들의 움직임도 한 방향과 반대 방향일 뿐이다. 사실 이런 대상은 그다지 유기적으로 형성되어 있지는 않다. 다만 각각의 필요성만으로 존재할 뿐이다. 그리고 때로는 하늘과의 경계선을 복잡하게, 물길을 일정하게 만들고, 산의 능선을 자른다. 이 모든 것들이 도시에서 흔히 볼 수 있는 것들이다. 이런 것들에게 둘러싸인 장소와 공간에서 우리는 살아가고 있다. 나는 길을 걸을 때 문득 이러한 것들이 서로 수치적인 관계를 형성하고 있음을 느낀다. 물론 확실히 말하자면 어떠한 것도 존재하지 않는다. 이 모든 것이 주변에 만들어져 그곳에서 우리가 생활하고 있을 뿐이다.
우리는 사회적 구조 속에 같은 것들을 무수히 재생산한다. 도시는 그러한 축적물의 집약체이며 편의와 편리를 위해 무감각, 수동적으로 팽창한다. 각 대상들이 만들어지는 과정은 신속하고 정확하다. 하지만 이 모든 것들이 긴밀하고 유기적으로 연결되어 있어 보이지는 않는다. 도시는 삶의 편의와 공허가 공존하고, 그것들로 인해, 그것들을 재료로 구축되어 간다.
수치가 존재하고 각 사물 간의 상대 값을 매긴다는 것은 그것만으로도 충분히 강압적으로 다가온다. 사회의 시스템이 존재하고 그 아래 모든 것이 이루어지는 환경 속에서 온전히, 어쩌면 극도로 정연히 이루어져 있는 질서는 도리어 개인에게는 혼란을 가져올 수 있다.
그래프는 보는 사람들로 하여금 2개 이상의 서로 관계가 있는 수량의 상대 값을 쉽게 이해시키는 그림이다. 나는 이런 그래프의 형식을 빌려 내 눈에 보이는 정경과 상황을 조합하여 그릴 뿐이다. 그러나 실재로는 아무런 수치적이나 비율적인 관계가 형성되어 있지는 않다. 다만 나의 시각이 그림을 통해 도시내부의 사물들의 관계, 인공물과 자연물의 관계가 사회에 끼치는 영향에 대해 재고하는 바람이다.
You cannot be free from the numeric.
Every numerical unit created for convenience creates a convention, and a convention creates another convention.
When we look at the landscape around us, we realize that similar objects are made up successively. The building facade that is equally arranged, the regular windows and bricks on the wall within it, the trees lining the street and uniform streetlights, the straight roads, and the cars on it. The movement of the cars and people on it too are only in one direction or the other. In fact, these objects are not formed very organically. It exists only as a necessity for each. And sometimes the boundary with the sky is complicated, the water path is made constant, and the ridge of the mountain is cut. All these things are common in the city. We live in a places and spaces surrounded by these things. When I walk down the street, I suddenly feel that these things form a numerical relationship with each other. Of course, to be clear, none of this is evident. All of this is created around us, and we exist in it.
We reproduce the same thing countless times in social structures. The city is a collection of such accumulations and expands insensibly and passively for convenience and comfort. The process of making each object is quick and efficient. However, all these things do not seem to be closely and organically connected. In the city, the convenience of life and emptiness coexist, and because of this relationship, they are made material in the environment around us.
The fact that numbers exist and that each object has a relative value is compelling enough. In the environment where the social system exists and everything under it is complete, perhaps extreme order can bring confusion to the individual.
A graph is a picture that allows the viewer to easily understand the relative values of two or more related quantities. Borrowing the format of this type of graph, I only draw by combining the scene and situation that I can see. However, in reality, no numerical or proportional relationship is formed. However, my perspective is formed from the desire to reconsider the relationship between objects in the city and the relationship between artificial and natural objects on society through painting.
